From startup to success: Leading a landlord organization

Guest: David Hutniak (CEO of Landlord BC)

David Hutniak leads Landlord BC, which is an industry association that represents owners and managers of rental housing in British Columbia. His organization represents landlords across BC and balances the interests of landlords and tenants.

Most of the members are not professional landlords, so he needs to have a passion for helping people. Guiding members through the political and regulatory red tape is a normal day for him, as well as building relationships between landlords and government.

This is not a career path that he envisioned when he was in university and starting out in the field in HR management and tech companies – his role at Landlord BC is an “accident,” as he calls it. And as the organization was new, he had to treat it like a startup and go from there.
