Researching and promoting agriculture and the food industry
Lenore Newman is an agricultural expert whose job consists of two parts: research in food and agricultural innovation and advising the provost of the University of the Fraser Valley on agricultural directions and projects. She also plays a mentorship role to those aspiring to enter the agricultural industry, whether it be in business or research.
Discovering skills that you don’t know you have
For James Donaldson, there is never a dull moment. It is his job to spot anything that negatively impacts members of the food and beverage industry in British Columbia. In other words, he looks out for their interests. This is not a role that James thought he’d end up in – when he graduated, he didn’t have a plan or clarity on what he wanted to do. Eventually he entered the food industry, which gave him the opportunity to learn more about himself and what he can bring to the table.
Becoming a diet researcher by not being afraid to fail
Dr. David Harper’s specialty is in diet, but he emphasizes that he is a PhD in life sciences, not a medical doctor. His true love is education and teaching, which he has done for more than 40 years, something he sees as an example of giving back to the field that gave him his purpose. He sees himself as an advocate for healthy diet who goes beyond the commercial interests of the industry. To him, the key to success is having a vision, being authentic, being accountable for your own actions, not being afraid to be vulnerable, being empathetic, and having courage to be all of the above. ”Don’t worry about failure,” he says, “but fail fast and fail forward.”
